Although he is resisting the temptation to leave, Benitez would be intrigued by the West Ham job if he can not reach a satisfactory agreement with Newcastle.

With Benitez enduring frustrating transfer windows during his time at St James' Park, Newcastle fans would be forgiven for sharing the same concerns that some at the club seem to now have if Mike Ashley does not provide assurances that he intends to back the 58-year-old during the summer.

West Ham said they hope to appoint a "high-calibre" successor within the next 10 days and have expressed an interest in Paulo Fonseca and Rafael Benítez, who might prove too expensive to prise away from Newcastle.

After keeping Newcastle up, Benitez is now being eyed by West Ham, who are on the lookout for a new manager after it was announced David Moyes would leave the club at the end of his contract.

It was in July of a year ago that Benitez urged Ashley to "keep his word" over transfer funds and reminded him that he could have quit the club for a mega-money deal in China. Hopefully Mike can preserve his phrase and we are able to do what we need to do. He said that he would give us every last penny so hopefully he will do it and I'm confident that he will. If you go to China you can make a lot of money.

'Then the assembly was essential to persuade me to remain.

Benitez, although, believes the next switch spend of round £40m fell in need of that promise and was irritated on the size of time taken to finish offers.

Benitez's representatives are in discussions with managing director Lee Charnley.

The former Liverpool and Real Madrid boss took over at St James' Park in 2016 and guided the Magpies back to the Premier League in his first full season.
