Public Advocate Letitia "Tish" James announced her campaign for NY attorney general Wednesday afternoon in Brooklyn. Last week, James withdrew herself from consideration for interim attorney general.

"The law should be an instrument for change", James said.

James' candidacy is just another example of the growing number of Black women seeking higher office.

Before taking on the position of Public Advocate, she worked as a councilmember. I will take on special interests who seek to destroy our families and our communities. I will take on ICE agents who seek to rip families apart.

We find ourselves in a precarious time in this country -our federal government is using the law as a tool to attack so many groups of people.

James joins a clan of potential candidates that include former U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara, New York State Assembly Member Daniel O'Donnell, former Congresswoman Elizabeth Holtzman, former state gubernatorial candidate Zephyr Teachout and New York State Sen., Michael Gianaris.

A bipartisan panel of the State Legislature conducted interviews Tuesday and Wednesday with candidates, including Underwood, to serve out Schneiderman's term, though not beyond.

Manhattan Democratic Party County Chair Keith Wright said that James possessed all of the characteristics to become the next state attorney general.

"Initially, what you want to do, especially on the Democrat side, is pick a candidate that can get elected on their own", said Wright.

James, who is now the public advocate for the City of NY, became the first Black woman to win a city-wide office in the Big Apple, and she's seeking to make history again. "The city is the voting engine that drives statewide elections". Bertha Lewis, president and founder of the Black Leadership Action Coalition, said that James has all the attributes of a potentially successful state attorney general. "She has an incredible work ethic and incredible moral ethics to fight for all New Yorkers. She has always been a progressive, always supported the community and she has never forgotten where she came from", said Lewis in a statement.

I am proud of my record of uplifting hardworking people who deserve a fair shot, of ensuring that the powers of the law are used to move us ahead on a path of fairness, first as a public defender, then as an assistant attorney general, in the City Council, and as Public Advocate.
