However, according to the United Kingdom press, the Spaniard's interest in the position has cooled, and compatriot Emery's appointment is expected to be finalised this week.

Arteta had been the favourite to replace ex-Gunners coach, Arsene Wenger after holding successful talks with the North London club last week.

"They'd no idea where he had gathered his information but they were mesmerised by the vision he put before them".

He also made it clear he planned to build his vision of Arsenal around two key players he regards as central to his plans for the club - star striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and midfield powerhouse Aaron Ramsey.

Meanwhile, Arteta is now expected to stay in his current role as No 3 to Manchester City boss Guardiola.

Wenger, 68, left the Gunners at the end of season after 22 years in charge, during which he won three Premier League titles and seven FA Cups, including two Doubles.

Having ended his tenure at Paris Saint-Germain, three-time Europa League victor Emery was a late candidate for Arsenal, who had been expected to appoint former club captain Mikel Arteta. Almeria, Valencia and Sevilla delivered improvement plus managed resources well.

Emery announced last month he would leave French champions PSG when his contract expired at the end of the season.
