Stephen Ryan, an attorney for Cohen, declined to comment, as did Brett Berman, an attorney for Freidman.

The BBC said the payment to the NY lawyer was at least $400,000 for making the sit-down happen.

Cohen took to Twitter Wednesday morning to distance himself from the "Taxi King". Special counsel Robert Mueller, who is leading the federal Russian Federation investigation, has also scrutinized Cohen's activities and business relationships.

Evgeny "Gene" Freidman, the flamboyant 46-year-old "Taxi King" of NY and a perennial tabloid muse, has been sued for ripping off drivers, spent time last year in a Chicago prison, and once faced criminal charges for slamming his now ex-wife against a wall.

"The government now has a strong inside witness who can assist in explaining many of Cohen's business activities and potential fraud schemes, especially when it came to valuing the medallions for loan purposes", he said. Additionally, as "Cohen's partner in the taxi business for years [,]" Freidman was, also his "friend" and confidant, often sharing meals with family members, and was undoubtedly given unprecedented access to one of President Trump's most trusted advisors, thereby making an interview with Mueller's team an interesting proposition. One of his partners, Yevgeny Freidman, earlier this week pleaded guilty to tax fraud and agreed to cooperate with state and federal prosecutors.

In 2015, Sater emailed Cohen and an unidentified Russian contact about his desire to aid Putin's effort to elevate Trump to the presidency in 2016.

The charges last June alleged Freidman and his chief financial officer, Andrea Dumitru, 42, of Queens, ran a scheme to withhold the funds by improperly filing or failing to file returns, failing to pay the tax on filed returns and by filing false returns. He handed off the management of his taxi medallions first to Garber and later to Freidman.

State prosecutors said Tuesday that Freidman, who operated 800 taxis between 2012 and 2015, failed to remit a 50-cent-per-ride tax owed to the state.

His official says a "back channel" to Trump was established by an aide, who used contacts in a New York Jewish charity called the Port of Washington Chabad.

"The Attorney General's office agrees that if the defendant fulfills these conditions, and taking into account all other factors known to the AG at the time of sentencing, we would recommend that he would receive a sentence of 5 years' probation". "Our office will continue to hold accountable those who cheat the system".
