In January, a train crashed near Italy's Milan, killing two and injuring more than 100 people. AGI said one female passenger was in a serious condition after sustaining a head injury but she remains conscious.

Rome: Two people were killed and 20 others injured after a train crashed into a rig truck near the northern Italian city of Turin and derailed, Italian media said Thursday.

Emergency services said the drivers of both the train and the heaavy goods vehicle (HGV) that is smashed into were killed.

It is understood most of the 18 injured were not in a critical state.

One of many much less significantly injured was reported to be a crew member, whereas the others have been passengers.

Rescuers worked through the night to make sure no passengers were trapped in the wreckage. Media reports said it was headed for a warehouse nearby.

It is unknown why or how the truck made its way onto the train tracks.

The accident was apparently caused by a truck that rolled onto the rail crossing just as the train was approaching.

The crash occurred near the town of Caluso, just north-east of Turin, forcing the engine and two carriages off the rails.

ANSA spoke to a young woman who broke her leg in the crash and quoted her as saying she felt as if she was being pushed from behind before falling. The train driver reportedly died at the scene, while the second victim died of the wounds at a Turin hospital shortly after being airlifted there by helicopter.

The practice left Turin at 10:30 p.m.
