SIMON YATES retained the overall lead in the Giro d'Italia as Elia Viviani claimed his fourth stage of the race yesterday. The 29-year-old Olympic omnium gold medallist adds to his two stage wins in Israel and last Friday's 13th stage at Nervesa della Battaglia.

"Basically, I just have to hold on for as long as possible". At least three times during this day Luis Leon was in different breakaways, the last one was neutralized with just 10 kilometers to go, Kazinform has learnt from the club's press service.

Simon Yates has been in imperious form on the Giro Italia climbs and now he has backed it up with a commendable display in the time trial to make himself outright favourite for the title.

Dutchman Dumoulin, the world time trial champion, took 75 seconds out of Yates, but had started the day two minutes and 11 seconds down in second place.

Four-time Tour de France victor Chris Froome was fifth on the stage, 35 seconds behind the Australian as the Team Sky rider moves up to fourth from seventh overall. "The first half I felt good, I had a good rhythm and I felt I was going well, I wasn't losing so much time".

"I'm really happy", Yates said shortly after crossing the line. "To win here and jump back in the top 10 is a big day for me".

"Being in the lead after the time trial changes my tactics for the remaining stages", he said. Unfortunately for the fans I may have to be a lot more defensive.

" It's a good gap and I'll see what I can do".

Overall leader Yates lost less time to second-placed defending champion Dumoulin than many observers had predicted. "I'm really happy. I'm really surprised I've kept the jersey, I'll be honest". I think that I'll be hurting a bit as well. Dumoulin was third, 22 seconds behind the BMC Racing Team cyclist. "I'd like to have a bigger gap but I'm very satisfied with where I stand now". Froome's result saw him rise to fourth place in the general classification at the expense of Frenchman Thibaut Pinot (Groupama-FDJ) who toiled in the drizzle to finish more than three minutes off the pace.
