Flamboyant former tennis world number one Ilie Nastase was pulled over by Bucharest traffic police twice on Friday on suspicion of drink driving and a few hours later for driving without a licence, the Romanian authorities said.

The 71-year-old attempted to drive away when flagged down by police at 4.45 am local time. Police gave chase and blocked Nastase's auto after 200 yards, the head of the Bucharest traffic police Victor Gilceava told a press conference. Gilceava said officers had to block Nastase's vehicle as he failed to stop.

"As he was visibly the worse for drink he was called on to take a breathalyser test and became aggressive, insulting the police officers", said an earlier statement.

Police stopped him again six hours later after he allegedly went through a red light on a scooter.

Nastase was allowed to leave police custody after being fined 1,000 lei (215 euros, $251) and his licence was suspended for three months.

Nastase admitted he had drunk beer but claimed police had manhandled him and thrown him to the ground during his first arrest.

He was released, but arrested for a second time hours later.

Nastase got in a police vehicle and placed a police helmet on his head during the second arrest. He was bundled into a auto.

He has retained those characteristics after retiring.

Last year, Nastase was fined and banned for foul-mouthed comments and misconduct as Romania's Fed Cup captain after hurling abuse at British player Johanna Konta and the umpire during a Fed Cup match. He also made advances of a sexual nature toward Britain captain Anne Keothavong.

In a separate incident, he was also found guilty by the International Tennis Federation of making "racially insensitive" remarks about the possible skin color of the then-unborn child of Serena Williams, who is married to internet entrepreneur Alexis Ohanian.
