"Following significant demand from our passengers, we believe that a pilot of full ride-sharing options is timely at Toronto Pearson, and in line with other airports across Canada and the USA already offering this service", Scott Collier, GTAA vice president, customer and terminal services, said in a statement. But regulations prevented car-sharing services to pick up passengers at Pearson unless it was a premium service like UberBlack.

Prior to the pilot, travellers were able to take Uber and Lyft rides to Pearson but only licensed Toronto Pearson taxis or limos were permitted to pick up passengers from the Toronto area airport. Toronto Pearson sees an average of 100,000 ride sharing requests per month, bolstered by the popularity of supporting services in adjacent communities like Toronto, Mississauga and Oakville.

To prepare for the launch of this pilot project, the GTAA studied best practices at other North American airports and consulted regularly with transportation industry partners to understand the benefits to passengers and impacts to operators.

The GTAA added that the airport will monitor how this move impacts existing transportation providers and will solicit feedback from these providers. "We're thankful to the GTAA team for their collaboration and we look forward to providing a great rider and driver experience at Toronto Pearson".

The service will give another option for 47 million annual airport passengers and 49,000 airport workers. Toronto Pearson believes being a good neighbour means balancing operations by engaging with communities that surround the airport.
