The statement to the Irish Times said: "Following the horrific gun attack that took place in Bray Boxing Club early last Tuesday morning in which one man Bobby Messett was tragically killed and two others Ian Britton and my father Pete Taylor were seriously injured, there has been considerable public interest in all aspects of the event".

'He has left a huge void in our lives that will never be filled again, ' his son told mourners. One of the injured is the owner of the boxing club Pete Taylor, who is the father of the former Olympic women's lightweight boxing champion Katie Taylor.

'He packed more into his 50 years than a man who could live to be 100, ' his son Gary added.

'Although we are all devastated that he was taken so cruelly and way too soon, it gives us some comfort to know that he is reunited with his ma and da, '.

To reflect his love of sport, gifts brought to the altar included his Glencormac United jersey, a Liverpool crest, golf balls, a picture of his pigeons, his boxing gloves and cycling helmet.

Members of the Bray Wheelers Cycling club and Glencormac United formed a guard of honour as Bobby Messetts remains were brought to the church in Kilmacanogue.

Fr Nguyen said that mourners were gathering at the church in a shocked state. The priest then told how it was Mr Messett who had organised his mother's funeral in February, and how he would often bump into him coming to the grave to pray for his parents.

Other mourners included former Ireland worldwide Damien Duff.

Mr Messett will be laid to rest alongside his mother, who passed away just three months ago.

"Bobby was kind, warm, friendly, gentle, hard-working and well respected".

Finally, to Bobby's family: You didn't deserve this heartache, I'm so sorry for your loss.

'I understand there is still a lot of uncertainty about the nature of the incident but I'm hoping the gardaí will get to the bottom of it very soon.

'I have been appalled by the misuse of my name and image during the reporting of this incident in the media coverage, it has been reckless and irresponsible, and a deliberate attempt to inappropriately leverage my name to sell a story.
