A Memphis woman was charged and arrested with two counts of child endangerment on Saturday after video showed her transporting two children inside pet kennels, Memphis Police said.

WATN reports the children, ages 7 and 8, told police their grandmother told them there wasn't room for them in the vehicle.

Cheeks was charged with child endangerment.

Arresting officers noted there being no air conditioning vents in the back of the vehicle with the children telling police they became hot.

She told them to sit in the kennels, usually occupied by her two puppies, for the 25 mile journey because there was no room in the back of the vehicle. Temperatures in the area reached about 35 degrees Celsius.

The disturbing footage shows 62 year-old Leimone Cheeks opening the grate to a dog kennel that was in the trunk of her vehicle. "For them to be in the hot auto like that in cages is sad", one neighbor, Nikita Blake told WREG 3. They say she's a woman of faith and a very nice lady. Cheek's longtime neighbors never saw this coming.

A concerned citizen shot the video and forwarded it to the police. "Wow", neighbor Skylark Blake said.

Cheeks was arraigned Monday and is due back in court on July 9.

"I don't think she knew because she loves her grandkids", Cowan told Fox 13. "It's a huge mistake, get some help yeah but put her in jail, it's hard to say", Blake said.

Children's Services and Memphis Police are investigating.
