A heartbreaking photo of a little boy comforting his younger sister the day before she lost her battle with a brain tumor received thousands of responses on Facebook.

One day before she died, the father of little Addy Joy, Matt Sooter, shared a heartbreaking photo on the Hope for Addy Joy Facebook page that featured his son Jackson comforting his dying sister in hospital.

Adalynn "Addy" Joy Sooter, 4, died on June 3 following a battle with diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG).

The now-viral photo showed Jackson saying "goodbye to his partner in crime, his play mate, his best friend, his little sister", the post reads. "But this is the broken world we live in".

It stopped the tumour for a while, but it started growing again and the family were forced to pay over £150,000 for experimental treatment in Mexico.

'Yesterday she woke up as her spunky playful self.

"While we still see short instances of our girl she can no longer eat or swallow without difficulty and she's sleeping most of the time now". Sooter wrote that "most likely she doesn't have much time left".

Four-year-old Addy bravely fought brain cancer for over a year before losing her life earlier this month. Jackson stands right at Addy's bedside with one hand on her forehead as she holds his other hand near her chest. For those who were wishing to say goodbye, I'm so sorry. She wasn't in any pain at the end.

"That in itself is a blessing because she suffered so little at the end".
