Illegal Defeat Devices Discovered In Daimler Vehicles

"The federal government will order an immediate official recall because of illegal defeat devices", Transport Minister Andreas Scheuer said in a statement.

Germany's Transport Ministry said on Monday that 774,000 Mercedes-Benz vehicles in Europe had been found to contain unauthorized software defeat devices and ordered Daimler to recall more than 200,000 cars in Germany.

Daimler said it would refit the software but denied any wrongdoing.

The announcement came a day after Germany's Bild am Sonntag newspaper reported that the national road vehicle authority KBA had found five illegal switch-off devices in Daimler diesels.

Five models in total are reported to be affected, including the volume-selling Mercedes C-Class - the UK's ninth most popular vehicle past year - and GLC SUV variants.

Mercedes-Benz is disputing whether or not the devices are indeed illegal, but would not confirm how many vehicles they were installed in.

This is specifically linked to two functions of the engine control in Mercedes-Benz Vito vans.

Germany can only order the recall of vehicles within its own borders, or of those vehicles issued with a pan-European road-worthiness certification via German authorities.

In January 2017, USA regulators ordered a stop-sale of several Fiat Chrysler Automobiles' diesel-powered models, including its Jeep Grand Cherokee, after regulators said it emitted more nitrogen oxide than allowed by law.

The auto industry's diesel emissions scandal continues to spread its noxious tentacles. A spokesman for the company declined to comment on specifics regarding the case, but said: "We are cooperating to a full extent and transparently with the KBA and the federal transport ministry".

Zetsche or Daimler didn't say anything about what the company's software may be created to do, but it's the second large fix for the automaker in as many years.

Evercore ISI analyst Arndt Ellinghorst predicted the costs for the required software update for Daimler would be less than 100million euros (£88million).
