Trump's claim that North Korea no longer poses a nuclear threat is questionable considering Pyongyang's significant weapons arsenal. There are still few details about Trump's decision to suspend U.S. "war games" in South Korea, which could fuel discussion about a weakening of the alliance.

"Kim Jong Un got what he wanted at the Singapore Summit: the worldwide prestige and respect of a one-on-one meeting with the American president, the legitimacy of North Korean flags hanging next to American flags in the background", said Paul Haenle, director of the Carnegie-Tsinghua Center. While Donald Trump said that the denuclearisation process of North Korea is expected to start "very quickly", Kim Jong added, "world will see a major change".

President Donald Trump's announcement Tuesday of the suspension of joint military exercises with South Korea appeared to catch U.S. Forces-Korea and members of his own party by surprise, but Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said he was consulted beforehand. Pompeo has stayed behind in Asia to follow-up on the summit with briefings with allies. Bloomberg hosted a live chat about the Trump-Kim summit on the LINE messaging app, where people tuned in to have their questions answers by editors. It's unclear whether the president informed US allies in the region of his plan to end the "war games", as he called them, prior to his declaration.

Sen. Bob Corker, R-Tenn., said Tuesday that he wants Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to brief senators on the substance of what the two nations discussed, including whether US troops stationed on the Korean Peninsula would remain.

Trump agreed to end joint U.S. "I think it's inappropriate to be having war games".

President Moon Jae-in is expected to be briefed personally by the USA secretary of state, who landed at Osan Air Base.

During his return, Trump spoke with South Korean Prime Minister Moon Jae-in and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. Mr Pompeo, the former Central Intelligence Agency director, then plans to fly to Beijing to update the Chinese government on the talks.

Trump announced Tuesday at a press conference in Singapore that he and Kim had reached an agreement on North Korea's denuclearization, although the text of that agreement was light on details, including a timeline for that process and how verification would work.

Despite the confusion and disappointment among some, the summit managed to, for a time at least, reset a relationship that has always been characterized by bloodshed and threats. It wasn't until Trump's tenure that North Korea began testing an intercontinental ballistic missile and the bellicose rhetoric between the two leaders ramped up.

Conservative House Republicans were unrepentant in their praise for the president for engaging with North Korea, a sharp reversal from many of their views on similar negotiations between President Barack Obama's Secretary of State John Kerry and Iran. The US had sided with South Korea in the conflict. Trump and Kim referred back to the so-called Panmunjom Declaration, which contained a weak commitment to denuclearization but no specifics on how to achieve it. In return, Trump has promised to stop US military drills in South Korea. Mr. Trump finally acknowledged.

Fifty-one percent of respondents said they approve of how Trump has dealt with tensions on the Korean Peninsula, and 40 percent said they believe that Trump deserves the most credit for a landmark summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

While progress on the nuclear question was murky, the leaders spent the public portions of their five hours together expressing optimism and making a show of their new relationship. He gave Kim a glimpse of the presidential limousine.

"We had a historic meeting and made a decision to leave the past behind", Kim said as he and Trump signed the joint statement, adding, "The world will see a major change". The president was forecasting what he hopes is the imminence of a formal end to the war that U.S., South Korean and United Nations forces waged 65 years ago. The next military exercise is scheduled for August.

KCNA said the two leaders "gladly accepted each other's invitation, convinced that it would serve as another important occasion for improved" relations between their countries. Mattis's chief spokeswoman, Dana W. White, told reporters he was "in full alignment" with Trump.

Ultimately, that may end up being the only option that the United States has short of war.

It's reflective of a broader theme on the KOSPI index, with other South Korean construction companies (such as Hyundai Cement, up more than 300%) also posting strong gains in recent months.

The first-ever meeting between sitting leaders of the two Cold War foes meant "the World has taken a big step back from potential Nuclear catastrophe!" he said in an earlier message. Instead, it commits Pyongyang to denuclearization, a promise the North has made - and broken - many times in the past.
