Post mortem due in Co Cork murder investigation

A man has been shot dead and his girlfriend seriously injured after a gang of men burst into their home in the middle of the night. His partner, who is in her 30s and also from Poland, was treated for non-life threatening injuries.

There was another woman as well as two young children aged under six in the house at the time of the incident.

The man later died from his injuries.

While police did not mention the weapons used in the brutal attack and only called it a "serious assault", TV3 is saying that the gang had used machetes in their attack.

Police said Wilk died in the hospital, despite the efforts of all medical teams involved.

Forensic examinations of both scenes were initiated and Gardaí are appealing for information. They believe the auto was a BMW 3 series. They are also anxious to interview anyone who spotted anything unusual or suspicious in those areas during the last three days.

The Polish man, named as Mikołaj Wilk, ran a gardening business and had lived in Ireland for at least five years.
