Local media report the authorities say they may have fallen while trying to recover a phone or to take photographs.

Praia dos Pescadores - or Fishermans Beach - on Portugal's Atlantic coast, is around 25 miles from Lisbon and is popular with tourists and surfers.

Their bodies were found at Pescadores Beach in Ericeira by fishermen this morning.

"It seems that (the victims) might be getting a "selfie", when they let the phone fall, leaned over to grab it and fell", he was quoted as saying.

Tributes have begun to flow for the beloved couple, who left Australia in January to travel the world and had attended a friend's wedding in Portugal just weeks earlier.

Cops have sealed off the beach while investigations continue into exactly what happened.

Speaking with the news agency Lusa, Rui Pereira da Terra, the head of the rescue service at the port of Cascais near the capital city, Lisbon, said that officials suspect the pair was taking a snap when they fell down the wall.

Tourists have plunged from the wall before and locals have asked for security measures to be implemented, according to the Telegraph UK.

Local media reported the pair were both Australian, however, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade said one Australian had died, and the department had been in contact with its British counterpart over the second death.

"The Department has been in contact with the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office regarding the other person who died in the incident", DFAT said in a statement on Wednesday.

"Owing to our privacy obligations we will not provide further comment".

The pair died after falling from the cliff top at Pescadores Beach in Ericeira, Portugal.
