Shinnecock Hills Traffic Causing Nightmares Ahead Of US Open

Tiger Woods confirmed to the media on Tuesday that he is indeed staying on his huge yacht during the US Open, one of golf's biggest competitions.

"Staying on the dinghy helps", he joked.

This week marks the 10-year anniversary of Woods' iconic US Open victory at Torrey Pines, his last win on golf's biggest stage. "There are a few guys this week who have said it's taken them from the hotel 2½ to 3 hours and there's a good chance that someone might miss their (tee time)".

But the 14-time major champion insisted on Tuesday there's a practical benefit to the decision: missing the worst of the traffic in and out of Shinnecock Hills this week.

Woods has shown flashes of brilliance in nine official PGA Tour events this year but has yet to bring together every aspect of his game in one week to achieve a victory.

Now 10 tournaments into his comeback from a fourth back surgery, Wood has at times struggled with his driving, his iron play and putting, the latter of which hurt him two weeks ago at the Memorial, where he tied for 23rd after one of his best ball-striking weeks in years.

"There's always something that isn't quite right and that's where we, as players, have to make adjustments. The key is to hit putts solid and see what happens".

"You've seen the tournaments I've played in this year".

"Either way, I guess strategy changes a little from an entire round, but I honestly had no idea that it even changed", Spieth said.

Whilst the traffic is causing nightmares, players like Woods with his yacht and Ian Poulter who came in on a helicopter aren't having problems with the traffic.

"I understand it because everyone wants to see a result on Sunday", Woods said.

"It's been nice to kind of get away from the tournament and scene and go to my dinghy there, and just really enjoy it, " he said.

Shinnecock is located on the narrow eastern part of Long Island, accessible by just one road.

"What I did at Memorial, I just didn't feel comfortable over it".

"Just had to hit a lot of putts, just put in the legwork, and I was able to do that", he said. And those greens were quick, and I just didn't feel comfortable and didn't hit many good putts. Can I actually participate in my kids' lives again?

"There's two ways of looking at that: I've given myself a chance to win, which I didn't know if I was ever going to", he said. "I've only been there for a few days now".
