Although it will be the first World Cup to be hosted by three countries, most matches will be played in the United States.

The 2026 tournament will be held in United States, Canada and Mexico after their joint bid beat that of Morocco on Wednesday.

The United Bid on Wednesday won Federation Internationale de Football Association approval in a landslide 134-65 vote, marking the first time three nations will share the event.

The US hosted the World Cup in 1994, while the tournament was held twice in Mexico (1970 and 1986).

For Morocco, it was the fifth time it had bid for the hosting rights to the football World Cup, calling it "the dream of a nation".

The host team always qualifies for the tournament, but there are questions about whether or not all three countries will be given automatic berths. The U.S. proposed to host 60 out of the 80 matches, leaving Canada and Mexico with 10 fixtures each.

The other chosen USA cities are Arlington, Texas; Atlanta; Baltimore; Cincinnati; Denver; East Rutherford, New Jersey; Foxborough, Massachusetts; Houston; Inglewood or Pasadena, California; Kansas City, Missouri; Landover, Maryland; Miami; Nashville, Tennessee; Orlando, Florida; Philadelphia; Santa Clara, California; and Seattle.

Fifa's president, Gianni Infantino, looked opportunistically quick to immediately put himself forward for re-election next year, and he was followed by U.S. president Donald Trump with a self-congratulatory tweet. American soccer officials downplayed the influence of politics on the bid.

"They have made a decision among themselves but ultimately it will be up to FIFA to decide", FIFA President Gianni Infantino told reporters Wednesday. More than 5.8 million tickets are expected to be sold, generating over $2 billion in ticketing revenue, according to the winning bid's projections. Before the vote, some had suggested that a "Trump effect" was harming the United States' chances, saying the president's quarrels internationally were putting off some countries. "Why should we be supporting these countries when they don't support us", had a major effect on the eleven African countries that refused to vote for Morocco's bid.

With only three teams in each group and each team guaranteed only two games, there is a greater opportunity for teams to collude with each other in the final group-stage matches to secure passage to the knockout round.

Following the poll results, Fouzi Lekjaa, head of the Moroccan Royal Football Federation (FRMF), emphasized "the determination of my country to continue to work for football...and to realize our dream some day of hosting the World Cup". Trudeau responded by saying that Canadians would "not be pushed around".

US President Donald Trump tweeted: "The US, together with Mexico and Canada, just got the World Cup". Thus far, cities in contention to host are New York/New Jersey, Seattle, Boston, Philadelphia, Atlanta, Denver, Miami, Houston, Dallas, Los Angeles, Washington D.C., Baltimore, Nashville, Orlando, San Francisco/San Jose, and Cincinnati.

A number of the grounds available to the bid would, however, allow for games to be played under cover in a climate-controlled environment.
