Their bodies were found at Pescadores Beach in Ericeira by fishermen this morning.

Corfina Media reported police will speak to witnesses who said they saw the pair sitting on the wall with their legs facing the beach.

Australia's foreign affairs department said they were assisting the family of its citizen.

The bodies of the woman in her 30s and the man in his 40s were found on the sand by a beach cleaner on Tuesday morning, Portuguese newspaper Correio de Manha reported.

The couple were believed to have dropped their phone, losing their balance on the wall overlooking a popular tourist beach near Ericrea, authorities say.

Speaking with the news agency Lusa, Rui Pereira da Terra, the head of the rescue service at the port of Cascais near the capital city, Lisbon, said that officials suspect the pair was taking a snap when they fell down the wall.

"It is with a heavy heart I have to announce that Michael and Louise were taken from us in a tragic accident in Portugal", Mr Kearns' mother Kathy posted on Facebook, alongside a photo of the couple. "RIP Louise Benson yet again another great soul took away from us far too early".

"Everything seems to indicate that the fall happened when they were probably trying to take a selfie".

"It seems that [the victims] might be getting a "selfie", when they let the phone fall, leaned over to grab it and fell", he was quoted as saying.

According PerthNow, Kearns was a mining fly-in-fly-out worker, and Benson worked for Sea Shepherd in Perth.

Pescadores Beach, which translates to Fisherman's Beach, is ringed by cliffs and a wall of up to 40m high.

Ericeira is a fishing town that's popular with surfers and tourists alike.

Louise Benson and her Australian partner Michael Kearns, who lived in Perth, were taking pictures on their Portugal holiday when the horror struck.
