Either way, if McGregor does sign on, it's another feather in the cap of a continually burgeoning Stephen King cinematic universe.

Danny's right here, Mrs. Torrance - and he looks like Ewan McGregor now.

Although Stanley Kubrick's The Shining became a cult classic, King was famously dissatisfied with the 1980 adaptation, and went on to write his own 1997 television miniseries.

It was based on the best-selling horror story published in 1977. McGregor will play the adult version of Danny Torrence, the terrified tot plagued by psychic powers who you probably remember best for screaming "Redrum" while he watched his father descend into a murderous rage.

The Shining sequel has been in the works at Warner Bros. for years, but has been moving forward steadily since Gerald's Game director Mike Flanagan joined the project five months ago.

"Doctor Sleep" picks up with Torrance years after the events of "The Shining".

In the sequel, the adult Dan Torrance is working in a hospice, helping dying patients and earning the nickname Dr. Sleep. That's where he meets Abra Stone, a little girl with a spectacular gift who is being hunted by fellow psychics who want her essence.

The story culminates with a fight on the site of the Overlook Hotel, the historic hotel that was the setting for The Shining. Following the success of New Line's "It", every studio with any sort of King IP under its roof has fast-tracked each property into pre-production.
