Most the World Cup games in 2026 will take place in the United States and it will be a 48 team World Cup - which should open the tournament's doors for the first time to many countries.

The FIFA Congress selected the United Bid over a bid from Morocco in a 134-65 vote early Wednesday morning.

Among the 22 other host city finalists are Washington and New York/New Jersey, both of which hosted matches in the 1994 World Cup, the last held in North America. Their lone opponent was Morocco.

Just one day before the 2018 World Cup gets underway in Russian Federation, the FIFA Congress voted to award the United bid of Canada, Mexico, and the United States the 2026 World Cup.

The 2026 World Cup has been awarded to Canada, the US and Mexico.

"I would like to reaffirm the determination of my country to continue to work for football and realise one day our dream to host the World Cup in Morocco".

The Football Association has not hosted the tournament since 1966, having failed in bids for the 1990, 2006 and 2018 tournaments.

In a statement Wednesday, Beare said she congratulates the United bid on its success.

Edmontonian Alphonso Davies, 17, was the first to speak in the United Bid's final presentation to the FIFA Congress prior to the vote.

Launched on June 1, 2016, Daily Hive is the evolution of Vancity Buzz and is now in Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto, and Montreal.

Two Miami residents - newly-elected U.S. Soccer President Carlos Cordeiro and Donna Shalala, a U.S. Soccer board member - were deeply involved in the bid process.

"There's no bigger sporting event than the World Cup, and Nashville will be ready to host the best soccer players and fans on the planet eight years from now", Mayor David Briley said.

The tournament involves 32 national teams, including current champions Germany and World Cup newcomers Iceland and Panama. The vote leaves Morocco reeling from a fifth failure in a World Cup hosting vote, with the continent's sole tournament coming in 2010 in South Africa. For instance, Los Angeles may host the US opener, Dallas is mentioned as a candidate to host the semifinals, while the final match is expected to take place in Met Life Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, just outside of New York City.

All matches from the Quarterfinal on, including the World Cup Final, will be played in the United States.

Morocco plans to use 14 stadiums, nine of which have yet to be built with the other five due for renovation.

"We will not be ideal but we are looking for uniformity and consistency - but it can not be 100 per cent", said Massimo Busacca, FIFA's head of refereeing.

"No one has said to us they're not voting for us because of who we have in the White House".
