A sinkhole developed underwater in the river near Dead Man's Curve on Saturday around noon.

The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission issued a warning for sailors on the Spring River to avoid an area known as Sadler Falls, about 150 miles north-east of Little Rock.

A sinkhole has opened in the Spring River in north Arkansas and was the site of a fatal boating accident Saturday, the state Game and Fish Commission said. Wright, who was in a kayak, paddled toward the whirlpool to try to help them.

The large sinkhole led to a whirlpool that caused the deadly boating incident, according to authorities.

The river is still open to the public, "but the barricaded area should not be breached", the commission warned in its Facebook post.

Experts say sinkholes are common in north Arkansas because of the nature of the local bedrock-and when they happen underwater, they can create risky whirlpools.

U.S. Army Corps of Engineers spokeswoman Laurie Driver said in a statement Monday that the agency is working with the county to help find a solution.
