Russian official urges love at World Cup after backlash

Football fans heading to Russian Federation and hoping to have a bit of fun during the 2018 Fifa World Cup could end up a disappointed lot.

Russian Federation expects to host about one million foreigners at the World Cup matches.

Pletnyova, who is the head of Russia's parliamentary committee for families, women and children, was speaking about the "Children of the Olympics" born in the aftermath of the 1980 Moscow Summer Games.

Russia's birth rate hit its lowest level in a decade a year ago despite government efforts to encourage Russians to reverse the demographic trend.

Asked if the World Cup could cause a spike in Russia's birth rate - a key goal for President Vladimir Putin - Pletnyova replied: 'We should be giving birth to our own children'.

Stating that she was "not a nationalist", Pletnyova added, 'nonetheless, I know how children suffer later on.

Russian women and visiting World Cup soccer fans: be fruitful and multiply. The poll was conducted among 1,600 respondents in 52 Russian regions between April 20 and April 24.

The much awaited World cup will kick off Thursday with host country Russian Federation taking on Saudi Arabia at the 81 thousand capacities Luzhniki Stadium. "You are lucky if they are from the same race, but if they are from a difference race, then it's even more", she said, cutting herself short in the end.

The term was used during the Soviet era to describe non-white children conceived at worldwide events after relationships between Russian women and men from Africa, Latin America, or Asia. Numerous non-white children faced racism, Reuters reported.

She added that, even if Russian women get married to their foreign partners, they could end up living overseas with their spouses and have no idea how to return home.

Couples should 'both be citizens of Russian Federation who build a good family, live peacefully and in a friendly way and bring up children together, ' she went on.

Federation Internationale de Football Association and the Russia 2018 organising committee did not immediately respond to a request for comment about Pletynova's remarks.

Pletnyova, a member of the Communist Party, has made controversial comments before.
