USGA stewards signal Rory McIlroy's approach shot from the rough on the third hole is heading to the right during the first round at the US Open.

Shinnecock Hills is embarrassing some of the greatest golfers in the world on Thursday, and Tiger Woods found out just how punishing the 2018 U.S. Open course can be on his very first hole.

McIlroy's birdie on 15 - they started on the 10th hole - was the group's first one of the morning with winds blowing at 25kmh and gusts of up to 32kmh.

The tough layout and breezy conditions took their toll on the majority of the field, with the high-profile grouping of McIlroy, Jordan Spieth and Phil Mickelson a combined 25 over par for their first rounds.

After missing from seven feet for birdie on the 10th, his opening hole, McIlroy dropped shots on the next two holes and then ran up back-to-back double bogeys on the 13th and 14th.

Spieth wasn't alone in his misery. Playing in the same group, McIlroy made two bogeys and two double bogeys in his first five holes while Mickelson made three bogeys in the same span.
