USA, Mexico, Canada named as hosts of 2026 FIFA World Cup

At the FIFA Congress in Moscow on Wednesday, FIFA's member associations voted 134 to 65, with one no-vote, in favour of the joint North American bid by Canada, the US and Mexico to host the 2026 World Cup over that of Morocco.

"This shouldn't be a geopolitical discussion or decision", U.S. Soccer President Carlos Cordeiro said this week, according to the Los Angeles Times. "Just awesome. I remember flashback to 94 World Cup".

The 2026 World Cup is coming to North America and Philadelphia will be pushing hard to host matches, most likely at Lincoln Financial Field.

Canada and Mexico have already named its three host cities.

The United Bid was endorsed by David Beckham and there will be 16 host cities across North America with the USA holding ten of the 16, while Mexico and Canada will have three each. Add World Cup as an interest to stay up to date on the latest World Cup news, video, and analysis from ABC News.

The last time the US hosted the World Cup was in 1994, with Brazil winning the tournament at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California.

Safe, rational and bountifully lucrative as the Federation Internationale de Football Association decision is to have the 2026 World Cup hosted by the US, Canada and Mexico, it is also disappointing for romantics fancying another tournament in Africa - and laced with contradictions, too. "Canada, Mexico, and the United States are ready to welcome the world to North America and serve as stewards of the largest FIFA World Cup™ in history".

All of these on their own are excellent reasons why hopefully we can persuade the 24 voters on the Fifa Executive Committee in December to award England this great prize.

Herdman, meanwhile, says hosting the event will be a "game changer" for Canadian soccer.

The socks are red and Montopoli wore them when Canada won the right to host the 2015 Women's World Cup as well as the 2012 and 2016 women's Olympic bronze-medal matches.

"No one has said to us they're not voting for us because of who we have in the White House". There is now a professional league that includes impressive infrastructure such as stadiums and training grounds, European games are omnipresent on television, top players now come from across the country, and the World Cup is big business.

The announcement was made on the eve of this year's tournament kicking off in Russian Federation. Will it inspire interest in the game to the point where future generations of American players have the desire and ability to take the national team to another level?

Both bids were given a last chance to make their case with 15-minute presentations in front of Congress, at the Moscow Expocentre, where the North America bid pledged their tournament would generate an 11 billion dollar profit, while Morocco said theirs would make 5 billion.
