Polestar Engineered will be the name for high-performance Volvos going forward, starting with the 60 Series T8 Twin Engine plug-in hybrid cars.

The difference here is that Polestar is focused on "electrification" and the first of the new-generation "Polestar Engineered" products will be the T8 version of the third-generation S60 sedan that's due to be revealed in a week from now.

The Polestar Engineered S60 gets Brembo mono-block brakes with six-piston calipers, cast in one piece and optimized for rigidity.

Volvo will reveal the new S60 next week at its first USA manufacturing plant in Charleston, South Carolina. Polestar will tune that powertrain with a new engine control unit that boosts it to 415 horsepower and 494 pound-feet, up 15 horses and 22 pound-feet, the Swedish automaker announced in a release one week before it unveils the new S60 at the opening of its Charleston, South Carolina assembly plant, sole manufacturer of the new sedan.

The Polestar Engineered multi-link front and rear suspension incorporates premium Öhlins shock absorbers with a dual-flow valve that allows stiffening in the springs and dampeners while retaining comfort. The tweaks are also expected to improve refinement of the eight-speed automatic transmission and lower the fuel consumption.

The shocks are borrowed from the Polestar 1 hybrid performance vehicle, meaning they are adjustable. But these new Polestar Engineered models are just the first step in Volvo one day finally rivalling brands such as BMW M and AMG, as full-fat Polestar models will likely hit even harder on the electrified sports vehicle drum. Polestar emblems, black-chrome tailpipes and gold-coloured seat belts also serve to identify these flagship models. "All components have been fine-tuned to work together, delivering a responsive and exciting drivers' auto".
