Peter Tatchell was detained near the statue of Marshal Zhukov in a public square which was busy with football fans ahead of the first game of the World Cup, while holding a poster attacking Russian president Vladimir Putin.

Artem Dzuyba netted a third before terrific late efforts from Cheryshev and Aleksandr Golovin wrapped up Russia's first win since October to launch their Group A campaign in style.

MOSCOW-Finally let loose after a year-long diet of worldwide friendlies, hosts Russian Federation roared their World Cup intent to the rafters on Thursday with a 5-0 tournament-opening win over Saudi Arabia.

The Green Falcons failed to fly high on Thursday night, with Saudi Arabia's national team on the receiving end of a 5-0 thrashing in the first game of the World Cup.

Russian Federation gets the ball rolling against Saudi Arabia at the completely refurbished 80,000-capacity Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow after an opening ceremony attended by President Vladimir Putin.

Putin and Infantino smiled and shrugged as they sat next to Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in the VIP box.

The crowd were then treated to a fabulous finale as Cheryshev cleverly rifled home an unstoppable curving fourth with the outside of his foot before Golovin capped a great personal performance by curling his free kick beyond the wall.

Just 12 minutes into the match, the Saudi backline got caught out of place after a corner kick, leaving a wide open opportunity for Yury Gazinsky to score the opening goal of the tournament.

"I have never done anything like this", Cheryshev said.

There was a dazzling on-pitch light show to accompany Williams and opera star Garifullina, with performers dressed in the colors of each of the 32 World Cup teams bopping to the music. The Saudis are not good either with their last victory in the tournament coming in the 1994 World Cup.

Pizzi was appointed to the job after Saudi Arabia qualified a year ago for the finals.

However, there was a blow for Russian Federation mid-way through the first half as star playmaker Alan Dzagoev limped off.

Coach Juan Antonio Pizzi had earlier said that Saudi Arabia would play without fear on Thursday.

Golovin is the young star of this Russian Federation team, and the CSKA midfielder was impressive against the Saudis, but Dzagoev's class and experience will be a key loss if he fails to recover in time for the remaining Group A games against Egypt and Uruguay.
