When Alex Hales, who already had a hundred to his name, hoisted Jhye Richardson for six in the 46th over it meant England had broken their own world record in men's one-day internationals. Opener Jonny Bairstow continued his rich vein of form and powered his way to 92-ball 139.

In posting a final total of 481, England surged beyond the previous record they had set of 444 for three against Pakistan at the same venue two years ago.

England registered the highest ever total in ODIs by scoring an incredible 481 for six in the third match against Australia in Nottingham on Tuesday.

When Hales and Morgan were dismissed off successive deliveries to leave England 459 for five off 47.3 overs, there were still 15 balls left in the innings.

Australia captain Tim Paine, who won the toss, used eight bowlers but was unable to stem the torrent of runs.

England have announced a 14-man squad for the Vitality T20I series against Australia and India, with Joe Root returning to the format for the first time since September 2017. England failed to score any boundaries in the last four overs - but before that they struck 21 sixes during an incredible display of strokeplay. As far as Australian bowling is concerned, fast-bowler Andrew Tye leaked 100 runs in the nine overs he bowled.
