The Kansas City Royals have traded pitcher Kelvin Herrera to the Washington Nationals.

In exchange for Herrera, the Royals received minor league 3B Kelvin Gutierrez, OF Blake Perkins and RHP Yohanse Morel from Washington.

So far this season, the Dominican Republic native was 1-1 with a 1.05 ERA and 14 saves in 16 chances. More generally, the Nationals are all-in on trying to make it deep into the postseason in Bryce Harper's walk year, so don't be surprised if GM Mike Rizzo makes additional moves before the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline.

Washington (38-31) is now only three games behind the young Braves in the National League East, but entered Monday on a three-game losing streak. It is unclear what his role will be, but the teams' current closer, Sean Doolittle, has been efficient this season. On Sunday night, the 37-year-old Madson took the loss for the Nationals after giving up back-to-back homers in the eighth inning of the Blue Jays' 8-6 win.
