The Saudi Arabian Football Federation have issued a statement to reassure the public that their team is safe after the technical failure of an airplane engine while they were travelling during the World Cup.

No injuries were sustained during the incident, which occurred at Russian Airlines Airbus 1319-100.

The videos uploaded to twitter show fire shooting from the engines underneath the wings.

"It was a small fire in one of the engines, the right engine, but the plane landed safely".

Flight operator Rossiya Airline blamed a bird strike for sparking the fire, but insisted that "nothing threatened the safety of the passengers" and that the landing "took place in routine fashion".

The statement further explained that the "plane landed at Rostov on Don Airport, adding that the team is "now safely heading to their residence".

The players are now in their hotel.

The Saudi official's comments were echoed by UAE Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Anwar Gargash, who tweeted that "sports are about wins and losses but the confused are those who politicise their sports channels".

It comes after they lost 5-0 to Russian Federation on the opening day of the tournament in a woeful defeat.
