The result equalled the best-ever in a World Cup opening game - Brazil beating Mexico 5-0 in Geneva back in 1954 - as Russian Federation took full advantage of a Saudi team whose defending fell painfully short of World Cup standard, while their attack was as good as non-existent. A pair of extra-time goals gave the host team some extra cushion in the goal-differential category. Denis Cheryshev has secured the second goal for his team at the 43rd minute.

"We brought them the best technical support, a team of the highest level and we paid them for three years".

Substitute Denis Cheryshev made two goals while Artem Dzyuba, Yury Gazinsky, and Aleksandr Golovin scored a goal each for Russian Federation.

In the 71th minute of the game, Artem Dzyuba, the substituted striker, elevated his team's lead with another athletic header, muscling his way clear from the opponent's skipper.

The home crowd, starved of any meaningful action for the last two years, were loving it as the red shirts poured forward with only some desperate defending preventing striker Fyodor Smolov from adding a second.

Saudi Arabia rarely threatened.

As the full-time whistle neared, the result was never in doubt but just as it looked like Russian Federation would be taking the foot of their gas, Cheryshev came up with what could prove to be the goal of the tournament.

Russia, who are the lowest-ranked team at the World Cup, head into the opening match as the 4/9 favourites for the win.

"There are no words to describe how I'm feeling", said Cheryshev, before settling on "happy".

TEAM NEWS AND POSSIBLE LINE-UPS: Russia are set to start veteran Sergei Ignashevich, who came out of worldwide retirement because of a number of defensive injuries.

Cheryshev started the game on the bench but made a 24th-minute introduction when Alan Dzagoev went down with a hamstring injury that could end his tournament. He was paired up alongside Roman Zobnin and Gazinsky. "We need to meticulously prepare ourselves", Cherchesov said.

In those games, Russia's laboured build-up play and careless passing looked light-years away from the irresistible, quicksilver side that lit up the European championship a decade ago. Salman Al-Faraj headed over from a free kick as the hour approached, but Russian Federation goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev remained largely untroubled. The 27-year-old Villareal winger scored his first worldwide goal on the big day.

Cherchesov, without two of his starting central defenders in Viktor Vasin and Georgi Dzhikiya, has to decide whether to use three or four at the back after recalling 38-year-old Sergei Ignashevich.

The win - the biggest by a host nation in the opening game of a World Cup since Italy in 1934 - gives Russian Federation precious three points in a tournament which is only going to get harder for Stanislav Cherchesov's men with fixtures against Egypt and Uruguay still to come in Group A.

The hosts opened the tournament at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow after the lavish opening ceremony and took on Saudi Arabia, who Italy beat 2-1 in a friendly last month.
