Italy's Osteria Francescana scoops world's best restaurant prize

It was a panel of more than 1,000 people who voted from a pool of chefs, restaurateurs, travelers and food authors, overseen by 26 chiefs attending this special event.

The victor has been in Spain seven times, the most of any country. El Celler de Can Roca is based in Girona, Spain, while Mirazur in Menton, France.

All winners were published and tagged on The World's 50 Best's Twitter page. Could it be possible that no local restaurant would be represented this year?

Spain continued to dominate the line-up with three restaurants in the top 10, including El Celler de Can Roca, while France had two including Mirazur. Head chef Bottura's restaurant in Modena, Italy, is discreet and serves contemporary cuisine, which challenges and reinvents Italian culinary tradition while making use of the finest produce from the Emilia-Romagna region.

Peru's celebrity chef Gaston Acurio, who is known for combining classic European techniques with typical ingredients from the Andean country, was given a lifetime achievement award. She has since spoken out about 50 Best's gender inequality, entreating the list's sponsor on Instagram: "please evolve and do the right thing".

And this year, they're quite right.

The 2018 list of 50 best restaurants included eateries in 22 countries - but over half were in Europe. Smyth had been awarded the controversial "Best Female Chef" title, and, despite her trepidations with that category's existence, she took an opportunity to speak out about the lack of representation in the industry.

'To separate (male from female chefs) for me is odd, but we don't see enough women coming through at the top and we need to do something about it, ' she said earlier this year. Atelier Crenn was No. 83 on the extended list a year ago.

Last year's victor, Eleven Madison Park in NY, slipped to number four, but goodies like a sturgeon and caviar cheesecake kept it rated the best restaurant in North America.
