Chevy has unveiled the 2019 Blazer, which has reborn as a new midsize crossover in Chevy's lineup, that slots it directly between the Equinox and Traverse.

Enthusiasts hoping the return of the Blazer nameplate would mean Chevrolet is ready to square off with Ford's upcoming Bronco will be disappointed.

"Chevrolet has been at the forefront of each of the major automotive industry trends by anticipating consumer demand and delivering innovative products like Bolt EV, Colorado, and Trax", said Alan Batey, president of GM North America and head of Global Chevrolet. The Blazer packs seating for five with 64.2 cubic feet of max cargo space with the second-row folded flat.

Both engines shift through a nine-speed automatic transmission.

Only this time it's not a thirsty and boxy truck like its predecessor, one of the original SUVs that was sold from the late 60's through the 2005 model year.

Available Hitch View feature that helps the driver align the hitch with the trailer.

Electronic-locking glove box - A Chevy first, it offers added storage security, and is roomy enough to fit a small handbag. From this vantage point it was much easier to tell the trio apart.

Safety tech such as adaptive cruise control and a rear camera mirror will be available on top RS and Premier models, but a full list of safety features been released. Other standard goodies include a cargo management system, led exterior lights, and 4G LTE connectivity.

At its peak in 1996, Chevrolet sold just over 246,000 Blazers. On AWD models, it also allows the system to be completely disconnected from the rear axle, meaning drivers can opt to have their vehicle operate in FWD when AWD capability is not necessary.

Instead of a truck-like body-on-frame design and old-school four-wheel drive system, the 2019 Blazer is based on a car-like front-wheel drive unibody platform, with optional all-wheel drive. It provides excellent performance in wet, snowy and icy conditions, while also providing enhanced stability in dry weather.

GM will make the SUV in Ramos, Mexico, and it will be available in a number of versions, including the luxury-trimmed Blazer Premier and sporty-looking Blazer RS. Pricing and fuel economy information will be available closer to when the Blazer goes on sale early next year.
