Republicans fume after Trump's latest immigration tweet undermines House talks

- President Donald Trump focused on "American victims of illegal immigration" Friday, hosting family members of those killed by undocumented immigrants at an event at the White House.

Calling for a "strong" border, he says: "We can not allow our Country to be overrun by illegal immigrants as the Democrats tell their phony stories of sadness and grief, hoping it will help them in the elections".

Relenting to pressure from lawmakers of both parties, as well as his wife and daughter, Ivanka, Trump signed an executive order Wednesday to stop separating families.

The two were reunited at about 2:30 a.m.at Baltimore-Washington International Airport in Maryland, hours after a Justice Department lawyer told a U.S. District Court judge the child would be released. The man, who is seeking asylum, spoke on condition of anonymity because, he said, a gang is looking for him in Brazil for failure to pay an $8,000 debt.

Laura Wilkerson, whose son was killed in 2010 by an undocumented immigrant, told audience members: "None of our kids had a minute to say goodbye".

The measure would grant young "Dreamer" immigrants who arrived in the United States illegally as children a chance for citizenship - a move many Republicans worry would enrage conservative voters who'd view it as amnesty.

When President Barack Obama tried to house children in detention centres during an influx of youngsters in 2014, his policy was deemed illegal by a judge in California - and any indefinite stays will likely lead to legal challenges for Mr Trump, too.

Beata Mariana de Jesus Mejia-Mejia (38), a Guatemalan, sued the U.S. government to get her child back. The official wasn't certain how numerous reunited children remained in custody with their families or how many were no longer in the country.

On Twitter, he wrote: "We can not allow our country to be overrun by illegal immigrants as the Democrats tell their phony stories of sadness and grief, hoping it will help them in the elections". "Permanently - they're not separated for a day or two days, these are permanently separated because they were killed by criminal illegal aliens".

"What is the objective of the House doing good immigration bills when you need 9 votes by Democrats in the Senate, and the Dems are only looking to Obstruct (which they feel is good for them in the Mid-Terms)", Trump tweeted. "We weren't lucky enough to be separated for five days or 10 days".

Meanwhile, the mayors of about 20 US cities gathered at a holding facility for immigrant children in the border city of El Paso. They accused Trump of failing to address a crisis of his own making and called for the immediate reunification of immigrant children with their families.

"Republicans should stop wasting their time on Immigration until after we elect more Senators and Congressmen/women in November", tweeted the president this morning.

"Elect more Republicans in November and we will pass the finest, fairest and most comprehensive Immigration Bills anywhere in the world", Mr Trump said on Twitter.

In abandoning the compromise bill and delaying a vote until after the elections, Trump risks losing $US23 billion in funding for border security included in the proposal, some of which would go toward building the wall.

Trump often invited them to appear on stage at rallies or met with their families behind-the-scenes, attending the group's annual luncheon in Houston in September 2016 as he touted key campaign promises to build a wall and deport people who are in the U.S. illegally.

"I don't think it will affect the mood of members who got very close yesterday and want to continue", he said.

ICE detention for migrants involve moving from foster-care type detention facilities with other children into more secure adult detention centers that resemble jails.
