In tragic news just in, metal legend Vinnie Paul Abbott has passed away at the age of 54.

Paul, who played the drums for the popular heavy metal band, passed away on Friday night, the band announced on Facebook. According to Billboard, Paul's representative no further details are available surrounding his death. "The family requests you please respect their privacy during this time." .

A cause of death is not immediately known.

He co-founded Texas groove metal pioneers Pantera with his brother, "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott, in 1981. Pantera's follow-up album, Far Beyond Driven, would debut at No. 1 on the Billboard sales chart and still stands, in many fans' opinion, as the heaviest record to do so. The band had a number one album in 1994 and earned four Grammy nominations, but disbanded in 2003 amid rumours of a rift.

Tragedy struck later that year when Dimebag was shot and killed onstage during a Damageplan gig in OH on December 8 by gunman Nathan Gale, who also killed three more people and injured seven others that night.

The Abbot brothers went on to form a new band, Damageplan.

Fans and fellow rockers, including Alice Cooper, Slash, Anthrax and Duff McKagan, are mourning the loss.

Their most recent release was Unden!able in 2016. The drummer later returned to music under Hellyeah in 2006.

Tragic news about Vinnie Paul today. "Another metal hero taken too soon". KISS' Paul Stanley tweeted, "So sad to hear of the death of Vinnie Paul". Say hello to [Darrell] for me.

"Rest in peace, Vinnie", Gene Simmons, bassists and co-founder of stadium rock giants Kiss wrote on Twitter. "RIP and condolences to his family".
