A report in NDTV said that five women in Jharkhand were allegedly abducted and gang-raped at gunpoint.

They attackers beat the male members of the team and forced the five women into a auto, took them to a nearby forest and raped them for three hours before releasing them, police officials have told CBS News. "Our probe is ongoing".

A group of five women went to stage a street play to raise awareness against human trafficking at a village in Jharkhand. Nine men and women were abducted.

The women worked for the non-governmental organisation Asha Kiran which is supported by a local Christian missionary group and were performing at the R.C. Mission School when the incident happened.

"We have been questioning several people", Prasad told AFP.

Medical tests to confirm the sexual assault were being conducted. Huge stone plaques and signboards, called Pathalgadi in the local dialect, have been put up outside tribal settlements and hamlets across Jharkhand's Khunti, Simdega, Gumla and West Singhbhum districts, warning outsiders from entering, wandering, living or settling down in these villages.

Sister Julia George, project director at Asha Kiran in Ranchi, told Al Jazeera that men arrived at the scene on bikes and overpowered the NGO workers.

Jharkhand has especially been in the spotlight after three teenagers were raped and burnt alive in separate incidents last month.

The suspect's whereabouts are unknown, so authorities announced a reward of 50,000 rupees ($737) for whoever helps locate him.

In May of this year, a girl was horrifically burned to death after her distraught parents complained to police about her being kidnapped and violently raped in India.

But the number of sex attacks has grown since then with some 39,000 rape cases reported nationally in 2016. "This is a problem in the area and the police are doing work to educate villagers about this", said Homkar.

Thousands of people took to the streets across the country in late April, in some of the largest demonstrations seen in India since the highly publicized rape and murder of a female college student in Delhi in 2012.
