Neymar has taken to Instagram to explain why he burst into tears after Brazil's 2-0 win over Costa Rica on Friday. However, they kept plugging away and were rewarded when Coutinho stabbed home in the first minute of stoppage time before Neymar added a second to end the match.

Brazil made a change at the break, bringing on Douglas Costa for Willian, and their bright start to the second period was nearly rewarded when Jesus crashed a header against the bar after 49 minutes.

The forward, who thought he had won a penalty in the 77th minute only for the referee to reverse the decision after consultation with the video assistant referee (VAR), was overcome by emotion on the whistle, covering his face as tears streamed down his cheeks.

Head Coach of Brazil Tite looks on during the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia group E match between Brazil and Costa Rica at Saint Petersburg Stadium on June 22, 2018 in Saint Petersburg, Russia.

It came at the ideal time with Brazil set to face a tough Serbia squad and the confidence they gained with this win could help them get three more points against the European squad.

Heading into the match, five-time champions were hoping to get their campaign at the showpiece event back on track following their disappointing 1-1 draw against Switzerland in the opening match.

Iceland, the smallest nation ever to compete in the World Cup, was not as effective as it had been in last week's 1-1 draw against Argentina.

Neymar and company could see themselves end the day in second place in the group if Serbia beats Switzerland later, but for now, Brazil moves into first and greatly boosts its chances of moving on to the knockout stage.

After the second half also ended at 0-0, the match went into the regulation time. "His artistic gesture cost Brazil the penalty", Globo TV commentator Galvao Bueno said on air.

Nigeria's Ahmed Musa scored twice (49', 75) to give Nigeria it's first taste of victory in this World Cup.

As it stands Brazil now lead Group E and could go through with a draw in their final pool match against Serbia.

"Now, the game against the Swiss team will only be for honour before we withdraw with dignity, as we have zero points from two games, no goal scored and three received", it said.

With this victory, Brazil will progress to Round of 16, whereas Costa Rica has been eliminated from the tournament.

Although left back Marcelo had an average game in defense, his constant runs down the flanks ultimately helped when his risky cross led to the opening goal.

But after 13 minutes, Costa Rica had a great chance to take the lead when Gamboa's pull-back from the right was steered wide by Celso Borges.
