The 28-oz versions of the vegetable trays that were distributed to IL and IN were also recalled, on June 15.

The states with reported victims are Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin and MI, according to the CDC, with seven people hospitalized so far. "The two cases from MI reportedly purchased the vegetable tray in Wisconsin and therefore MI is not impacted from this outbreak", said the FDA.

The CDC said on Thursday that the outbreak is linked to Del Monte 6-, 12-, and 28-ounce plastic clamshell vegetable trays.

The earliest reported symptoms in this outbreak began on May 14 and those who are ill range in age from 13 to 79 years old.

The 212 cases occurred in Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin and technically also MI, but the instances of illness in MI were reported as related to people who bought products in Wisconsin. Symptoms include frequent bowel movements, loss of appetite, weight loss, stomach cramps and pain, bloating, increased gas, nausea, and fatigue. The trays were purchased at various retailers including Kwik Trip or Kwik Star convenience stores.

Those affected have been diagnosed with cyclosporiasis, an intestinal infection caused by the cyclospora parasite.

On June 8, Del Monte Fresh Produce recalled 6-oz. and 12-oz. vegetable trays containing fresh broccoli, cauliflower, celery sticks, carrots, and dill dip that were sold by Kwik Trip/Kwik Star locations in Iowa, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin.

FDA has not identified which of the ingredients is the vehicle for this outbreak; each component of these vegetable trays is under consideration.

What are the Symptoms of Cyclosporiasis?

The investigation is ongoing and the CDC will provide updates when more information is available. The agency recommends throwing out all recalled products.

The CDC urges consumers to not eat the recalled vegetable trays, and instead, they should throw them away.
