The corporation has changed this year's list to reveal figures in bands of £10,000, as opposed to last year's brackets of £50,000.

Gary Lineker is the BBC's best-paid presenter on an annual salary of £1.75-£1.78 million.

Claudia Winkleman is still the top paid woman, on £370,000-£379,999, while Mary Berry and Newsnight's Emily Maitlis are among eight women to have joined the list. She was on £150,000-£199,999 past year.

The BBC first published a list of its highest earners in July 2017, after the government ordered the corporation to reveal the names and salaries of its on air-talent earning above £150,000 previous year.

The BBC argues that the latest list does not reflect the true balance of payments to its male and female stars, due to the salaries through BBC Studios not being revealed.

Many of the BBC's popular shows like Strictly Come Dancing, which are made by BBC Studios, are no longer included on the list because BBC Studios is now considered a commercial entity which means some names have dropped off the salary list.

Past year the BBC's top seven biggest earners were all men - but this figure increased to 12 in 2017/2018.

The BBC's list includes presenters from news, sport, radio, and some TV entertainment shows.

Two-thirds of the full list (66 percent) of on-air talent on more than £150,000 are men and 34 percent are women.

The corporation has also published the detail of which programmes the stars have worked on, in the hopes this will "help ensure that more informed comparisons can be made", according to a BBC source.

Clare Balding earned £180,000-£189,999 in the 2017/2018 financial year.

The corporation has insisted that it is getting closer to ending a highly publicised pay gap, but you still have to scroll through a list of a dozen men before you get to the highest paid woman - Claudia Winkleman.
