- Los Angeles fire crews were battling a brush fire Tuesday in Griffith Park, reported to be about two acres in size northwest of the Griffith Observatory.

The fire is 100% contained and about 75 firefighters and heavy vehicles are patrolling the burn area for hot spots in case winds kick up during the day, said Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphrey.

The blaze erupted shortly after 2 p.m. (2100 GMT) and charred 10 acres of drought-parched chaparral and grass on the slopes of Griffith Park at the edge of the observatory grounds before firefighters brought the flames under control about 90 minutes later, fire officials said.

The roads, lots and trails around the famed Griffith Observatory will remain closed Wednesday after a fire burned in the hills surrounding it.

About 600 to 700 visitors and staff were in the building at the time of the evacuation, observatory museum guide Juan Gutierrez told Reuters by telephone. The cause of the fire is being investigated. The statement did not say when the observatory would reopen. Left blind and disfigured, she divorced him.
