The studio describes the upcoming Joker movie as an "exploration of a man disregarded by society [that] is not only a gritty character study, but also a broader cautionary tale", The Hollywood Reporter reported Tuesday.

The studio have released a statement confirming the project is underway, with The Hangover's Todd Phillips to direct the film which is "meant to be different from comic book superhero movies".

Joaquin Phoenix has reportedly closed his deal to play The Joker in a standalone Warner Bros. film, which now has the greenlight to start production in September, per THR. Sources say the story will take place in the '80s and have more of the look of a gritty crime drama than comic-book movie.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the standalone film was picked up by Warner Bros. and will begin filming in NY this September with Phoenix playing Batman's arch-nemesis.

Whatever the case may be, Phoenix is one of the finest actors of his generation and watching him portray the gradual descent of a normal man into the deranged mind of the Joker will be fascinating.

Joaquin Phoenix will portray mad Batman villain the Joker in a new origin movie, following months of rumours about the project. "I think it's cool when people do that".

Warner Bros.is also reportedly in development on a separate Joker feature film which would star Jared Leto as the villain, reprising his role from Suicide Squad. That we're confident about.
