Contractor hit gas main before explosion that killed firefighter, hurt 12 others

One firefighter has died and another was critically injured in a gas explosion and fire that leveled several buildings in downtown Sun Prairie.

Fires are still burning after a massive gas line explosion in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin. He opened the drinking establishment in 2016.

New details are emerging about a firefighter who was killed when a gas leak ignited a building explosion in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin Tuesday night. Five other firefighters were hurt, and seven others were treated for minor injuries.

Fire crews worked into the evening and flames could still be seen from Sun Prairie High School, almost one mile away just before midnight. We will keep on building from this. He said he didn't know if anyone else was hurt.

Witnesses reported the powerful blast about 7:15pm. The blaze took at least three hours to put out, and by the end of it, a firefighter was killed while several others were reportedly hospitalized.

We Energies has said a private contractor struck a natural gas main, causing a leak. Police set up a half-mile perimeter around the site.

Help has also poured in to Sun Prairie High School in the form of snacks, water and hefty donations to help the Red Cross assist those who were forced to evacuate their homes.

The official Facebook page of the City of Sun Prairie wrote: "All residents are advised to avoid downtown Sun Prairie". He said the building across from his shop 'literally lifted up'.

He said the force knocked him back in his chair and that he ran outside and saw a ball of fire.

"People were scrambling", Owen said, according to Fox 6.

Jill Thompson, 56, who lives about two blocks away, said she saw smoke immediately after the blast occurred.

"On behalf of the whole state, we say we love you", the governor said. I thought someone had hit the building with their vehicle.
