The Handmaid's Tale star Samira Wiley and New Amsterdam star Ryan Eggold were on hand to announce the nominations to the world on July 12 from the Wolf Theatre at the Television Academy's Saban Media Center. "We are pleased to have these two talented performers join us to announce this year's Emmy nominees and to celebrate television excellence".

"Game of Thrones" roared back onto the Emmy battlefield, topping Thursday's nominations with 22 bids but facing a formidable opponent in "The Handmaid's Tale, " last year's top drama series.

The revival of "Roseanne, " canceled because of star Roseanne Barr's racist tweet, drew only one major nomination, a supporting actress nod for Laurie Metcalf.

This year's ceremony, broadcast from Los Angeles' Microsoft Theater, will be hosted by Saturday Night Live's Michael Che and Colin Jost.

HBO's fantasy dragons-and-swords saga is a two-time best drama victor that sat out the last year's Emmys because of its production schedule.

Donald Glover's "Atlanta" is the top comedy with 16 bids.

The previous high for "Game of Thrones" was 24 nominations in 2015.

Beginning at 11:25 am ET, Wiley and Eggold will reveal the nominees for the 70th Primetime Emmy Awards, airing Monday, Sept. 17 (8/7c) on NBC.
