Israel softens tone on Assad but threatens Syrian troops near Golan

The Golan Heights was illegally captured by Israel in 1967 and annexed in 1981.

The drone was an intelligence-gathering aircraft and belonged to the Syrian government and its remains have already been retrieved just south of the Sea of Galilee, nearly ten kilometers (six miles) inside Israel, an army spokesman told reporters.

Conricus said that after the drone was destroyed by a single Patriot missile, its remains landed near the Sea of Galilee.

In recent days, Israel has noted the serious refugee problem created by the Syrian regime's routing of areas in southern Syria near the border with Jordan.

Supposedly Israel waited 15 minutes before shooting it down, so they could check with the Russians, and make sure it wasn't theirs before shooting it down.

In the ensuing years, Israel has rarely commented on targeted strikes against Iranian convoys attempting to deliver weapons to Hezbollah in Lebanon or airstrikes against Iranian military bases in Syria.

"We will continue to act decisively against any spillover and any infiltration of Israeli territory or airspace", Netanyahu said.

A second Israeli official told Reuters that Netanyahu's message did not constitute any "quid pro quo" offer to Russian Federation.

On June 24, Israel's military said it launched a Patriot missile at an incoming unmanned aerial vehicle, which turned away unharmed.

"We will discuss Syria, we will discuss Iran, we will discuss Israel's security needs", Netanyahu told reporters before departing.

"We are still looking into why it crossed - whether it was on a military mission and crossed on objective, or it strayed", he said, while adding that the latter scenario was "not common".

"We made a decision to bring with us two wonderful children who are bravely fighting cancer: Mika, whom my wife and I have known for nine years, and Alon, whose parents emigrated from Russian Federation and who likes soccer very much".

Russian Federation is allied with Iran and has been the military backbone behind Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad's slow-burning recapture of territory controlled by rebel forces during the country's seven-year-long civil war.

Under Assad family rule, Syria held direct negotiations with Israel in the United States in 2000 and indirect talks mediated by Turkey in 2008. The IDF has not yet said exactly who flew either drone. On July 6, Israel struck a Syrian post that it said had shelled the Golan buffer zone.
