The 33-year-old Girls actress admitted that although she is a believer in the body positivity movement, she sometimes looks back at the old photo "longingly" until she remembers the struggle it took to get there.

Dunham posted a paparazzi picture taken on herself on set at Brooklyn's Coney Island in April 2017 alongside a recent paparazzi picture of herself about town with her pet Yorkie, Bowie.

"138 pounds, complimented all day and propositioned by men and on the cover of a tabloid about diets that work", she wrote. She added that she was also "sick in the tissue and in the head and subsisting only on small amounts of sugar, tons of caffeine and a purse pharmacy".

In the caption of the post, Dunham tells her 3 million Instagram followers that she has chose to "lean in" to the weight gain, and that she is feeling "happy, joyous & free".

And just today she shared two side-by-side photos of herself opening up about her 24-pound weight gain, and why she's totally cool with it. "As I type I can feel my back fat rolling up under my shoulder blades".

It's been a challenging few years for Dunham, who underwent a total hysterectomy - the removal of one's cervix and uterus - and split from her boyfriend of five years, Jack Antonoff, in January. She's often dealt with "constant nausea" from her anxiety disorder as well as pain from endometriosis. Most recently, Dunham opened up about how it feels to have gained weight - and how other people have commented on her body differently.

"I don't want to be on this cover cuz it's diametrically opposed to everything I've fought my whole career for and it's not a compliment to me because it's not an achievement".

"When endometriosis entered my life full throttle, I knew I had to make some adjustments as I dealt with a chronic disease, but it was hard to admit those changes might be dietary", she wrote.

"This woman is a legend", one person said.
