Lovren hails Croatia's historic World Cup achievement

"From my point of view, people said I had a hard season but I don't agree with that", he told BeIN Sports after beating England.

The euphoria of reaching a World Cup final may have gone to Dejan Lovren's head in the moments after Croatia defeated England on Wednesday night.

The Liverpool centre back also said his country was now thirsty for "revenge" over France in Sunday's showpiece as they seek to banish the memory of their semi-final defeat to same nation 20 years ago.

I showed why I took Liverpool to the final of the Champions League and now with the national team, and now I'm in the World Cup final.

Lovren, 29, had been irked before the clash against England by questions of how he would deal with Harry Kane after the Tottenham Hotspur forward gave him the runaround in a 4-1 win for the north London side against Liverpool last October.

"I think people should recognise that I am also one of the best defenders in the world and not just talk nonsense". Before this game they said we are exhausted but we showed in extra-time we had fresher legs than them. "We couldn't control the ball or control situations", said Lovren. "I wish we could both be in the final for that game but there is only one victor".

France, who beat Belgium in their semi-final, have a population 16 times that of Croatia, and Lovren has rather eloquently summed up his country's tumultuous history.

"Now we have the chance to do something even better and hopefully we can do it". "In extra-time we showed we are still able with the fatigue to play our game".

"England are one of the favourites to win the World Cup and you have to respect that", he said.

"I went through a lot of sh** and now I would say it is coming back".
