As the world rejoices at the miraculous escape of 12 boys and their football coach from a flooded cave in northern Thailand, the wife of a former Thai Navy Seal who died during the rescue operation is mourning his death online.

Mr Kunan died on July 6 after losing consciousness during a mission to place oxygen tanks deep inside the cave, just two days before the first group of four boys was brought out.

The former Thai navy Seal succumbed to lack of oxygen while delivering supplies.

A dive buddy tried to administer first aid in the water and then got Saman through to chamber three, where further attempts were made to revive him, but it was too late.

Mrs Gunan told the BBC her husband loved charity work and helping others.

"It's like I've died, but I'm still alive... but I use pride to repress my sadness", she told the BBC.

The bowels of Tham Luang cave are described as being pitch-black with near-zero visibility.

"Every morning before he left for work, we said we loved each other". Thousands of people have shown their support for her, sending comforting wishes and calling her late husband a hero. 1 NEWS' Correspondent Kimberlee Downs is in Chiang Rai, Thailand.

"The determination and dedication of Saman will always be in all of our frogmen hearts", the Thai Navy SEALs said in a statement after his death.

His funeral was held at a temple in the province of Roi Et in eastern Thailand, where friends, family and colleagues paid their respects.

His grieving father was also reported to be proud of his son's selfless deeds but was very sad to lose his beloved son.

She said she had discussed death with the man she "loved so much". "Saman once said we never knew when we would die, we can't control that, so we need to cherish each day", she explained.

Jubilant Acting Chiang Rai Governor Narongsak Ostanakorn thanked the Thai people and the government their support after the successful Thai cave rescue.
