The Giants chose Western Michigan CB Sam Beal in the third round of the 2018 NFL Supplemental Draft on Wednesday, in a move that should significantly bolster the depth at a position in desperate need of it this season.

Wide receiver Cris Carter is the only Pro Football Hall of Fame player to come from the supplemental draft. If they had drafted him in the third round, they would have lost a third-round pick in next spring's NFL Draft. To determine that, teams are divided up into three groups: Teams that won fewer than five games, teams that won more than five games but missed the playoffs and then playoff teams.

The supplemental draft, in existence since 1977, provides an opportunity for players who did not enter their name in the regular draft, held in April. Although he has average speed, he is very aggressive and can take receivers out of the play if he gets the upper hand early. Each group has its own lottery drawing to determine the order, which is decided shortly before the supplemental draft starts.

Bids begin with the first-round pick for 2019 for each of the teams. They were absolutely the best on the board when they were picked. In OTAS and minicamp, Carrie got the most reps with the first-team defense.

Often, players entering the draft are college prospects who have an off-the-field issue (or two or three) that have them ineligible for their upcoming collegiate campaign. There are 5 players eligible this year, but they won't all be drafted.

Instead, the New York Giants placed a third-round bid on Beal, one pick ahead of the Cleveland Browns, who were also rumored to have interest in Beal.

Do teams have to make a pick?

After looking like a potential high draft pick, he took a step back in 2017, playing in just eight games and recording 27 tackles and one interception.

The Broncos have an extra selection in the fifth round of the 2019 NFL Draft thanks to the Trevor Siemian trade, but now, do not have extra picks on day one or two of the 2019 Draft or any compensatory picks coming. "They took the time to help, even when they're supposed to be on vacation, they were sitting there with me, making sure I'm all good". That was a shame because it would have been the second selection of that round, number 57 overall.

The Colts have some draft capital in 2019 to play with. These players made a decision to submit paperwork for the Supplemental Draft rather than sit out the season or transfer to a lower level of competition. If a player is not selected in the first round, the process repeats in the second round, and so on. So the Buccaneers could choose to put, say, a fourth-round pick on Beal if he is still available, and if no other team does so they would get their man.

Beal was considered the cream of the crop and had been expected by many to perhaps go as high as the second round. This year is different; there's three.
