"Rangers can give these boy a stage and platform to perform on".

A lot has changed since then; new manager Steven Gerrard is at the helm, and a host of new signings have arrived to boost Gerrard's options as he prepares for his first competitive game as Rangers manager.

Along with a potential deal for Cooper, Umar Sadiq and Lassana Coulibaly will join on loan this week when they receive global clearance.

"The fans are with us, and you could see that the other night and we have sold-out the first European game, so they want to come and they are ready to come with us", Gerrard told Rangers TV.

"Good players are on the same wavelength and good players gel pretty quick and that's what we've tried to into the transfer market for - for good players, for talents. We'll try and get them in".

The 36-year-old, who has 96 caps for Portugal, joined Rangers last summer from Cagliari.

The Scottish giants are thought to have made a £3million bid for Millwall centre-back Jake Cooper.

As well as Sadiq and Coulibaly, Rangers have also signed Connor Goldson, Nikola Katic, Jamie Murphy, Allan McGregor, Jon Flanagan, Scott Arfield and Ovie Ejaria - the latter on loan from Liverpool.
