TSX gains ground on industrials sector as loonie moves up

Canada's main stock index closed down as the key energy and materials sectors lost ground and commodity prices fell on increasing trade tensions.

In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average ended down 219.21 points at 24,700.45.

The Toronto Stock Exchange's benchmark Standard & Poor's/TSX Composite Index rose 80.56 points, or 0.49 percent, to close the day at 16,452.34 points.

The Canadian dollar slid 0.01 cent at 0.76.24 US dollar.

The August crude contract was down 21 cents to $73.59 (U.S.) per barrel and the August natural gas contract was down three cents to $2.83 per mmBTU.

The August gold contract was up $6.90 to US$1,262.70 an ounce and the September copper contract was up three cents to US$2.85 a pound.
