Workers were Thursday packing up the industrial water pumps, heavy-grade machinery and construction equipment at the mouth of the Tham Luang cave, which had been a high-tech command center during the 18-day ordeal.

After nearly three weeks trapped in the dark, away from their loved ones in a cave in northern Thailand, the boys, aged between 11 and 16, were allowed to see their relatives in a carefully controlled environment, as doctors are still concerned about their health.

"The area will become a living museum to show how the operation unfolded", former governor Narongsak Osottanakorn, who led the risky rescue mission, told a news conference. "Thank you so much to everyone that has been praying for us and the boys and helping us; thank you".

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) said last week, after the team had been found alive, that it planned to promote the Tham Luang cave complex in the province of Chiang Rai as a tourism attraction as it had featured so heavily in news stories around the world. You went into the cave with our children and you must get out with them.

Stunning footage of that rescue was released Wednesday, July 11, showing the youngsters - aged 11 to 16 - being stretchered to safety.

Messages were sent to the Thai boys following the Thai cave rescue. "My job was to transfer them along".

His parents dropped him off at a Baptist church in the border town of Mae Sai. and the principal of Wiang Phan School, which Sam-on attends, told the Times that he is "the best of the best" and that stateless children often have a "fighting spirit that makes them want to excel".

But they pressed on and, on July 8, the rescue began.

On Wednesday, they too were recovering, nursing battered hands and feet from wading through the cold water in the cave to reach the boys.

A Google search on Tuesday for the words "Thai cave rescue" revealed 359 million results.

The exact mechanics of the rescue bid were closely guarded during the operation, but details have since dribbled out.

One of the team members, Sam-on, is a top student and athlete whose proficiency in languages allowed him to act as translator for the British divers who helped rescue the team, CBS News reported.

Chaiwetch Thanapaisal is director of Chiang Rai Prachanukroh Hospital.

Derek Anderson, a 32-year-old rescue specialist with the US Air Force based in Okinawa, Japan, said the dozen boys and their coach were "incredibly resilient". To swim through the flooded tunnels, which could get as narrow as 15 inches, one diver held the front end of the stretcher, along with the boy's oxygen tank, while another held the rear end of the stretcher.

The soccer team went for regular explorations of the cave. "I'm going to give them a hug", he said. "They have to help each other".
